What is Menopause:

The menopause is officially when a women's period stops completely for a total of 12 months, which normally happens between the age of 50-58.

This signals the end of the reproductive years and the start of a new phase of life.

 

What is Peri-Menopause:

This is lead-up to the above happening, when periods become irregular, they can be heavier, lighter and the cycle lengths can start to vary month on month.

This is known as the peri-menopause. This can start, on average, at or around the mid-forties and for some can last for up to 5 years or more.

This is also the time some feelings or physical problems they haven't experienced before can occur.

For some, it can happen earlier - either naturally, or after treatment for another conditions.

 

The Cause of Peri-Menopause and the Menopause:

Hormone levels are changing - specifically oestrogen, which controls the menstrual cycle.

As women age, the ovaries produce fewer eggs, oestrogen levels fluctuate and then gradually reduce, and this leads to the menopausal symptoms above.

However, this doesn't happen overnight though.

It can take several years for this crucial hormone to fall to low levels - and then it stays that way - causing changes to the body along the way.

When the ovaries stop producing eggs altogether, pregnancy is no longer possible, and this is when the menopause happens.

 

Symptoms:

The menopause - and the peri-menopause years leading up to it - affect women in different ways.

The brain, periods, skin, muscles, and emotions are all affected by falling levels of oestrogen.

There are lots of possible symptoms and you can have some of them, all of them, or none - and for varied lengths of time.

 

The most common symptoms are:

• heavy or irregular bleeding
• hot flushes
• night sweats
• low mood
• vaginal dryness
• bladder problems
• weight gain
• Hair Loss

Other less mentioned symptoms can be, poor memory and concentration, usually called brain fog, painful joints and skin issues like dryness or adult acne.

Not all women get symptoms - but most do, around 75% of women report to have one or some of these symptoms.

A quarter of women going through the menopause describe having severe symptoms.

They can last for an average of seven years, with one in three women experiencing them for even longer. 

A lot of women don’t think about the menopause until their early to mid-forties. However, this can happen earlier and more frequently now we are seeing women going through these stages and symptoms in their thirties.
